Throughout our legal studies, we have become increasingly aware of the struggles faced by LGBTQIA+ individuals both in and en route to legal careers. Be it through the journey many of us take to discover of our true identity and then reveal that to the world, a history of anti-LGBTQIA+ prejudice in law or even the discrimination and under-representation that continues to be encountered in the profession today, the path to law for many queer people often is not straight (forgive the pun).
Equipped with a year of experience on the Founding Committee of LGBTQIA+ and Law at the University of Exeter, we have seen first-hand the positive impact that a network like this can have for LGBTQIA+ aspiring lawyers. In fact, although we brainstormed the idea for this network nearly a year ago, our work this past year has enabled us to truly understand the need for a nationwide community of this sort and our experience has catalysed our drive to make it happen.
